Film and discussion with the filmmaker, Marissa Acosta, an MIT grad.
Acosta's film tells the tale of "The Late Risers' Club" a ragtag group of community radio disc jockeys who banded together to create WMBR's Late Risers' Club, the first radio program in Boston to play punk rock on a daily basis.
Vintage footage, photo montages and great interviews tell the story of the gestation period of a 25-year+ institution. Begun in 1977 on MIT's radio station WMBR, the Late Risers' Club program showcased punk and alternative music, and was a forerunner of what we now consider college radio, one of the few noncommercial stations in the country at that time championing unheard of bands, both local and national.
The Late Risers' Club can still be heard today, every Monday-Friday 10 am-noon, on WMBR 88.1 FM, or on the Web at wmbr.org.
In addition, January also marks the 20th year that Joanie Lindstrom has hosted the Thursday Late Risers' Club. To celebrate, she'll host 6 hours of radio, taking over the 8-10 am Breakfast of Champions and noon-2 pm Lost & Found, as well as her usual 10am-noon time slot, to play her next round of favorite songs of all time. Tune in from 8 am to 2 pm at wmbr.org.
