If you had five Top 20 songs all in one year (1967) and few people knew who the band was that played the hits they loved so much...well, then you'd be Chicago's The Buckinghams. "Kind of a Drag (#1), "Mercy Mercy Mercy" (#5), "Don't You Care" (#6), "Susan" (#11) and "Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song)" (#12) all helped them become the "Most Listened to Band of 1967," but this success was fleeting, and the band broke up by 1970 with four albums to its name. Singer Dennis Tufano and guitarist Carl Giammarese then became a country rock-flavored duo with the perhaps unfortunate name of "Tufano & Giammarese," and released three albums in the 1970s under the tutelage of the great producer Lou Adler. But come the '80s The Buckinghams reunited and today feature Carl and the other original guitarist Nick Fortuna, and hell yeah, they're peddling nostalgia...and it feels so good.
The Buckinghams will be appearing as part of the "Happy Together" tour (along with The Turtles, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, Classics IV, The Cowsills, and Chcik Negron of Three Dog Night) at the Lynn Auditorium in Lynn, MA on June 13.
