"AFRIKAAN BEAT Meet AFRICAN BEAT" on WMBR's Subject to Change Program

Bert Kaempfert's 1962 song "Afrikaan Beat" is a faux-African ditty of the exotic/"orientalist" style a la "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." Kaempfert's buoyant trumpet melody personified the post-WWII expansionism of Europe. Jamaica re-appropriated the song for its own purposes, as it did for most Western pop hits. First, it became an early ska song by Don Drummond and then, in the early 80s, became an overpowering riddim, led by Barrington Levy's "Under Mi Sensei." We'll spend two hours globetrotting this song.
