Manu Dibango's 1972 jam "Soul Makossa" is the Louie, Louie or Le Freak of Afropop - a propulsive dancefloor magnet with seemingly nonsense lyrics. Originally a "deep disco" tune among tastemaking clubs, the song by the Cameroon saxophonist became a Top 40 hit in the US. It is probably most known for providing the break in Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Something" (#5 US pop in 1982), but also inspiring a spate of carbon copies - from Afrique to Lafeyette Afro Rock Band." "Soul Makossa" inspired adaptations and retitlings in as many styles of music: "Salsa Makossa"; "Rock Makossa"; "Reggae Makossa" and so on. We'll hear those variations as well as songs that sampled Manu's classic.
