CUCKOO FOR CUCURRUCU!

The 1954 Mexican balled "Cucurrucu Paloma" (sometimes sans "Paloma") is guaranteed heartstring-puller that uses the call of a morning dove to express longing. The refrain of "Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay" has been deployed in both campy and melodramatic renditions. The song became US supper club fare, thanks to Harry Belafonte's 1956 cover, but it also inspired renditions in multiple balladic styles and genres across the globe. Caetano Veloso's 1996 live chamber-style rendition, featured in Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her film, warrants special note.
