The Wiyos may be the most varied and versatile band to emerge from New York City in many years. They have studied the spectrum of traditional American musical idioms that were recorded in the 1920s and 30s including country blues, swing, rural ragtime, jugband and Appalachian mountain music; but they write original songs that are rooted in their 21st century experience. They can engage and entertain four generations of a family -- the grandparents enjoy the musical nostalgia, the parents were hip to the 60's folk revival, the college kids dig a band that is fresh and distinctly independent from the derivative formulas, and the grandkids love the washboard and physical comedy. The Wiyos have played at The Kennedy Center one week, and then a pig roast on an isolated island the following week. They have played on the streets of New Orleans and New York, performed at the venerable Newport Folk Festival, and shared the stage with a burlesque troupe at a strip club.
