Michael Brewer of Brewer & Shipley Interviewed Live on WMBR's Lost & Found program

Was aired on the program: Tuesday, August 4, 2009
12:00pm - 2:00pm

Michael Brewer of folk-rock duo Brewer & Shipley is scheduled to join host Eli Polonsky for a live telephone interview beginning around 1:00 PM EDT! In the early 1960s Brewer and Tom Shipley began separate careers as folksingers in the midwest. First meeting at the Blind Owl Coffeehouse in Ohio in 1964, they finally teamed up as songwriters in Los Angeles in 1967, and released their first album as a duo in 1968. Preferring the rural life of the midwest, they moved to a farm outside Kansas City, Missouri and joined the local country-folk-rock music scene. They released four albums over the next few years, including their most successful "Weeds" and "Tarkio", recorded in San Francisco with guest musicians including Mike Bloomfield, Nicky Hopkins, Richard Greene, Paul Butterfield and Jerry Garcia. "Tarkio" included their Top Ten hit "One Toke Over The Line", which resulted in the duo being labeled "subversive" by Vice-President Spiro Agnew and placed them on President Nixon's "Enemies List". Reuniting in 1987 following an eight-year hiatus, Brewer & Shipley have been recording and touring sporadically to the present, making a rare area appearance at the Center for the Arts in Natick on Saturday, August 8.
