I pity the (April) fool that doesn't recognize the Genius of Aretha Franklin. The dramatic TV series about the Queen of Soul kicks off with a rendition of today's selection, a Don Covay number. Mistreated by her husband at the time, Aretha brought a knowingness to the lyrics, which depict one of many mistreated lovers - the chain of fools. Chain of Fools found Aretha at the peak of her powers - though admittedly several years after she first deserved attention. Her fourth gold single, it continued her canonical pairing with producer Jerry Wexler and musical partnership with the Muscle Shoals crew. The Lady Soul was one of nearly ten records she completed in a four-year span. We'll hear two hours of variations/versions and vandalisms.
