Pedal steel guitarist Buddy Cage, longtime member of psychedelic country-rock band New Riders Of The Purple Sage (NRPS), is scheduled to join host Eli Polonsky for a live telephone interview at 1:30 PM!
NRPS was co-founded in 1969 by current leader David Nelson, the late John "Marmaduke" Dawson, and Jerry Garcia, seeking an opportunity to play country-styled music on pedal steel in addition to psychedelic rock with the Grateful Dead. They were often the Dead's opening act in the early '70s, and their albums gained frequent FM radio airplay.
When Garcia left NRPS in 1971 to focus on the Dead, Buddy Cage, after years as a session musician and a member of Ian & Sylvia's band Great Speckled Bird, was invited to replace him on pedal steel. Other musicians he recorded with include Bob Dylan, David Bromberg w/Bonnie Raitt, The Band, Brewer & Shipley, Robert Hunter, and many more.
Following lineup changes in the '80s and '90s and an eight-year hiatus, NRPS reformed in 2005 with Nelson, Cage, and former Hot Tuna member Michael Falzarano with Ronnie Penque and Johnny Markowski. NRPS will be making a rare Boston area appearance this Wednesday, September 17th, at Johnny D's in Somerville. Listen for your chance to win tickets!
Location: 88.1 FM
