PATNAUSEAM (PATDEMIC Edition): VIVA TIRADO!

Was aired on the program: Subject to Change
Sunday, June 20, 2021
12:00pm - 2:00pm

Gerald Wilson's 1962 paean to teenage matador José Ramón Tirado was a simple West Coast big band jazz number until transformed into a surprise Hispanic pride anthem by El Chicano in 1970. El Chicano's cover, while also an instrumental, inspired a vocalese take written by Norman Gimbel (also responsible for English versions of Quien Sera and Garota de Ipanema), as well as plenty of covers. Wilson's originally has been disputed as an inspiration for Drum Song, by Jackie Mittoo and the Soul Venders, which became the Drug Song riddim of Jamaica. We'll hear two hours of it
