Hosted by:

Sam Cooke left gospel scene in 1957, but gospel did not/could not leave him. His 1962 composition, which borrowed heavily from Chuck Brown's I Want to Go Home (from 1957 with pianist Amos Milburn) returned gospel spirit to his pop music. The composition became a top 20 single (#2 on the R&B charts), and became a blues-based ballad that influences artists of all genres and nationalities, with hit covers by the Animals, Eddie Floyd, Lou Rawls, and others. We'll explore two hours of this soul-gospel classic.
